Why You'll Love This Craft
- Yarn tassels are one of my favorite easy crafts to make because they're so simple and fast, plus you can buy a skein of yarn and make dozens of tassels from that one ball of yarn.
- This is the perfect Halloween craft for kids. It uses simple supplies like yarn, scissors, googly eyes, and glue, and it doesn't require advanced skills. Older kids can make them by themselves, and younger kids can add the googly eyes or trim the bottom of the tassels.
- These tassel ghosts can be turned into yarn keychains, yarn tassel garlands, or just used to decorate shelves, mantels, or kitchen tables.
Craft Supplies Needed
- Yarn - One skein of yarn can make many tassel ghosts!
- Googly Eyes - You can use any size googly eyes. Even if the eyes have adhesive on the back, you'll want to glue them on for extra security.
- Felt - You can use paper or cardboard too, but felt works best because it's easy to cut and flexible.
- Scissors, Hot Glue Gun and Glue - Staples of every craft room!
How to Make Yarn Tassel Ghosts for Halloween
Step 1. Make yarn tassels using either the cardboard method or the by-hand method.
Both methods work; it's a matter of whichever you like best.
Step 2. Trim up the bottoms of the tassels so they're nice and even.
Step 3. Cut ovals out of the black felt for the "O" mouths of the ghosts.
Step 4. Hot glue googly eyes onto the round head of a yarn tassel.
Hot glue the felt mouth below the eyes.
Step 5. Continue adding faces to the rest of the tassels.
Step 6. You can leave them as they are, or hang them up by threading twine or yarn through the top of the tassel with an embroidery needle.
Common Questions
There are two main methods for making yarn tassels. The first uses a piece of cardboard to help you, and the second uses your hand. Both ways are outlined in this tutorial showing how to make a yarn tassel.
They both work well, it's a matter of preference which one is better. I like the simplicity of using my hand, so that's the method I use most often.
The adhesive that sometimes comes on the back of googly eyes is designed for paper or other flat surfaces. It is not intended for yarn. I would always use hot glue to attach your googly eyes to your yarn tassel to make sure they stick.
The yarn tassel ghosts are cute by themselves; they could be scattered on shelves, the mantel, or the kitchen table as part of your Halloween decorations.
You can also add a hanging string to make ghost ornaments, string a bunch of them onto a long piece of twine or yarn to make a tassel garland, or turn them into yarn keychains.
Aren't they cute?!?
Yarn is an easy-to-find, cheap craft supply, so tassels are the perfect craft to make.
Kids love googly eyes, and they love Halloween, so this Halloween craft is a winner!
You can add them to spray-painted Halloween lanterns or DIY spray-painted Halloween pumpkins to complete your Halloween decorations!
