DIY Tassels are very easy and fast to make. You can make paper tassels, tassels out of toilet paper tubes, or even fabric tassels, and the process is generally the same.
Today, we are using tissue paper to make handmade tassels. Using the same method we used for all those other tassels, we are going to make two different types of tissue paper tassels.

Why You'll Love This Craft
- These tissue paper tassels are super easy and fast to make - you can make a bunch of them in minutes!
- Tissue paper is easy to find at any store; I bought mine at the Dollar Tree!
- Once you learn the process of making a tassel, you can use tissue paper like we did here, or any other type of paper, fabric, or even something like leather or cardboard tubes from the inside of toilet paper to make your own tassels! And the tassels can be make into a garland, a keychain, or other fun accessories too.
Craft Supplies Needed
- Tissue Paper - I bought a variety pack at Dollar Tree but you can buy it anywhere. (You can even save the tissue paper you get inside gifts for a future project!)
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue, and Scissors - Craft room staples to help you make the tassels!
How to Make a Tissue Paper Tassel - (Large-Sized)
Step 1. To make a large, long tissue paper tassel, we will use a full-sized piece of tissue paper.
Step 2. Fold the piece of tissue paper in half, bringing the top edge down to the bottom edge.
Smooth out the top edge to crease it.
Step 3. Cut slits into the tissue paper from the bottom up, about ½" apart.
Stop cutting about 2" from the top folded edge.
Step 4. Continue cutting the fringe along the whole bottom edge of the tissue paper.
Step 5. Put a line of glue along the folded top of the tissue paper, and begin to roll the tissue paper.
(The hot temperature of the glue caused my tissue paper to discolor. If you don't want this to happen, you could always use Tacky Glue or even Elmers white glue.)
Step 6. Continue gluing and rolling the tissue paper up into a tassel.
Secure the end with glue so it doesn't unravel.
That is the large-sized tissue paper tassel. It's more like a thin pompom with a handle.
How to Make a Small-Sized Tissue Paper Tassel
In this next small-sized tassel variation, we will use the same method, but the sheet of tissue paper will be cut in half before we begin.
Step 1. Fold a full-size sheet of tissue paper in half, bringing the top edge down to the bottom.
Step 2. Cut along the top folded edge to cut the full-sized sheet in half.
Step 3. Fold the half-sized sheet of tissue paper in half again, bringing the long top edge down to meet the long bottom edge.
Flatten to smooth out the folded top edge.
Step 4. Cut slits up from the bottom edge of the tissue paper about ½" apart, stopping about ¾" to 1" from the top of the folded edge.
Step 5. Glue along the top of the folded edge and roll the tissue paper tassel up.
Step 6. When you get to the end, secure it with glue so it doesn't unroll.
That's it! The small version of the tissue paper tassel is done!
Common Questions
You can buy tissue paper at big box stores in the gift wrap section, or any craft store! I picked mine up at the Dollar Tree; it was a variety pack of pastel colors. My favorite upcycling trick is to save the tissue paper when I get gifts (as long as it's not ripped) to use for future gift wrapping, or for crafts like these! I smooth the tissue paper out, fold it up, and store it where I keep gift bags and wrapping paper.
It's so fun, isn't it?! You can use paper to make tassels, or even the cardboard tubes from inside toilet paper rolls to make DIY tassels! We have also made fabric tassels from shop towels (also bought at the Dollar Tree) and you could use any type of fabric from denim or leather to felt!
You can hang individual tassels up as ornaments like we did with this book page tassel ornament, or turn them into DIY keychains, similar to the yarn tassel keychains we made (just use the paper or fabric tassels!) My favorite way to use DIY tassels is to make a garland like this toilet paper tassel garland or tissue paper tassel garland!
Tissue paper tassels can be used as decorations for birthdays or other fun occasions. String a dozen together and you've got a beautiful tissue paper tassel garland!
You could also use several sheets of tissue paper stacked together, and make a large, thick tassel that could double as a DIY pom pom!
