LEARN HOW TO MAKE A TOILET PAPER ROLL TASSEL GARLAND USING ONLY RECYCLED TOILET PAPER TUBES, SCISSORS, HOT GLUE, AND STRING!
Every time I get to the end of a roll of toilet paper, I see the cardboard tube and I wonder, "What could I make with this? I hate to throw it away..."
I'm sure it's the crafter in me, but I know it holds so much potential; I hate to see it go to waste!
There are dozens of ways to repurpose toilet paper rolls into awesome crafts like a toilet paper flower garland, toilet paper emotion buddies, and today, we're making a tassel garland!
All you need are empty toilet paper rolls, string or twine, scissors, and a hot glue gun, and you can make a chic tassel garland that you'll actually want to hang up in your house!
Here’s how we do it!
How to Make a Toilet Paper Roll Tassel Garland
Step 1. Gather Supplies.
Supplies Needed:
- Toilet Paper Rolls - (one roll makes one tassel)
- Scissors
- String or Twine
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue
Step 2. Cut a toilet paper roll open and cut slits along bottom to make fringe.
Take a toilet paper roll and cut down the length of it.
This will give you a rectangle of cardboard.
Next, flatten the roll as best you can. This will make it easier to cut slits.
Starting at one end of the tube, cut a slit from the bottom, stopping ¾" from the top.
Move down about ¼" and cut another slit. Repeat.
Continue down the length of the toiler paper tube until you have cut slits the entire way.
Step 3. Cut 2" string and hot glue into loop on top of tassel.
Cut a 2" section of string. This will become a small loop to use to thread the tassels onto string later, to make a garland.
Next, put a dab of hot glue on one end of the tassel, in the top ¾" section without fringe.
Fold the 2" string in half to create a loop and lay the loop into the glue.
Step 4. Begin rolling the tassel from the loop end, hot gluing along the way.
Begin to roll your tassel from the end with the loop, hot gluing along the top as you roll to secure it.
Continue rolling and gluing along the whole length of the tassel.
When you get to the end, hold it in place as the glue dries so it won't start to unravel.
Or you can use something to help secure it while the glue dries, like a clothes pin.
Step 5. Repeat tassel-making process for all of your toilet paper rolls.
Continue making tassels out of all your recycled toilet paper tubes.
You can also fluff out the fringe on the finished tassels a little bit.
This will make them a more full, like a typical tassel.
Step 6. Thread a section of string through the loops on top of tassels to make a garland.
Using the string of your choice, thread a section through the loops at the top of your tassels one by one.
The end result will be a beautiful, rustic chic garland you can hang up in your home!
Tassels are a great all-around craft project; easy to make, and super versatile.
They can be made with embroidery floss as a full-sized DIY tassel or a small tassel version, with yarn, fabric like these shop towel tassels, or even paper like this book page tassel.
And now, we know how to use the same method of making a paper tassel garland to turn a toilet paper roll into a recycled rustic chic tassel garland!
String a handful of them together and you've got yourself a garland!
