Learn how to take old toilet paper cardboard tubes and make recycled DIY toilet paper roll flower ornaments with them!
Life is full of recyclable items that can be upcycled for crafts - plastic yogurt cups, straws, cardboard, old books... once you start looking, you'll be amazed at what you find!
Nearly every house also has an endless supply of one of my favorite recyclable items... cardboard tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls!
We've made fun kids' crafts with toilet paper tubes including a quirky ice cream cone garland that's a crowd favorite, as well as beautiful toilet paper roll flowers.
Today, we are going to make the same flowers using toilet paper tubes, and we are going to turn them into rustic chic toilet paper flower ornaments!
How to Make Toilet Paper Flower Ornaments
Step 1. Gather Supplies
Supplies Needed:
- Toilet Paper Tubes from toilet paper or paper towel rolls
- Scissors
- Hot Glue Gun and Glue
- Single Hole Punch
- Twine
We are going to use the same toilet paper roll flower tutorials we used here to make these ornaments.
Step 2. Flatten a cardboard tube from a toilet paper or paper towel roll.
Then cut sections that are roughly ½" wide.
(You can experiment and make flowers with different width sections; each will create a different look. I found sections that are ½" wide or slightly less are the easiest to work with.)
These sections of toilet paper tubes are going to be the flower petals.
Step 3. Begin by putting a dab of hot glue near one end of a petal.
Step 4. Line another petal up to the first and pinch the ends together until the glue dries.
Step 5. Repeat this same procedure for as many flower petals as you want your flower to have.
The flower in the photo below has 6 cardboard petals.
You can glue many more petals together than the 6 we showed above.
This flower has 10 petals.
The toilet paper flower in the photo below has 14 paper petals.
As you can see, the number of petals changes the look of the flower.
Step 6. If you want to make a smaller flower, start by cutting sections of toilet paper rolls like you did for the flowers above.
Then fold the cardboard section in half.
Put a dab of hot glue inside the folded petal to help keep it folded.
This creates two flower petals for a smaller version of the toilet paper flower.
Hot glue petals together the same as you did before, by adding a dab of hot glue to the base and pressing another petal to it.
Continue to add sections of petals until your flower has the desired number of total petals.
The cardboard flower below has 14 total petals or 7 folded 2-petal sections.
Step 7. Use a single-hole punch to make a hole at the end of one flower petal.
Step 8. Thread a section of twine through the hole as a hanging string and tie a knot at the end to form a loop.
Trim off any extra twine from the knot.
Your toilet paper flower ornaments are done!
These ornaments are so humble and beautiful in their simplicity, and in their origin too - they came from the parts of toilet paper and paper towel rolls that everyone throws away (or recycles)!
Toilet paper roll flower ornaments are easy to make, even for kids, and they can be hung as is or decorated with paint or other embellishments. You can even string a handful of flowers together to make a toilet paper tube flower garland!
