Common Questions
To make salt dough, all you need is flour, salt, and water!
Yes, you can double, triple, or halve the salt dough recipe, depending on how much salt dough you need! The standard recipe calls for 2 cups flour, 1 cup salt, and 1 cup water.
A double batch of salt dough: 4 cups flour, 2 cups salt, 2 cups water.
A triple batch of salt dough: 6 cups flour, 3 cups salt, 3 cups water.
A half-batch of salt dough: 1 cup flour, ½ cup salt, ½ cup water.
Make sure you put the salt dough in the refrigerator for 10+ minutes before you roll it out for the cookie cutters. This will make it easier to roll and less sticky.
If it gets too sticky as you're working with it, you can put it back in the refrigerator and chill it again.
You can also add a little more flour to the dough and to the cutting board and rolling pin to decrease the stickiness of the dough.
Salt dough is so versatile - you can use it as a simple play dough, or you can cut it into shapes using any type of cookie cutter.
The hardened shapes make great ornaments and can be painted easily using acrylic paints. You can even make a pretty salt dough heart-shaped jewelry dish! That makes it the perfect kids' craft or handmade gift idea!
