    Why You'll Love This Craft

    • Felt is so fun and easy to work with - it's cheap to buy, comes in so many colors, and is found everywhere from craft stores to online retailers.
    • You can cut felt into any shape you want because it cuts so easily with just a sharp scissors. We are using a freehand heart template for this project.
    • This same process can be adapted to make felt trees with any shape of felt. We've made felt trees for winter (with actual felt tree shapes), and now these heart shaped trees. You could try stars, Easter eggs, or even something like felt shamrocks for St. Patrick's Day!

    Craft Supplies Needed

Supplies needed to make felt hearts.
    • Heart Shape Template - Use paper, cardstock, or cardboard to trace and cut out a heart template.
    • Felt - You can use felt sheets or get felt from the bolt at craft stores.
    • Disappearing Ink Marker - You could also use a pencil.
    • Scissors - Sharp scissors make the cleanest cuts.
    • Dowel - You could also use wooden skewers or even chopsticks.
    • Wood Round with a hole in the middle - This makes the base for hearts. I used small sections of a wooden dowel, with a hole drilled in the middle.
    • Hot Glue Gun and Glue - A craft room staple!

Step 12: Decide how tall you want the hearts to be, and remove any excess from the dowels if needed.

I broke off the bottom three or four inches from each dowel.

Add hot glue into the wooden base.

Step 13: Add hot glue to the hole in the wooden base.

Insert the wooden dowel of the felt heart into the wooden base.

Step 14: Slide the dowel into the wooden base and hold it in place until dry.

    Common Questions

Where is the best place to buy felt?

Felt is sold at every craft store either in precut felt rectangles or on the bolt in the fabric section. It comes in a wide range of colors, and there are different levels of quality of felt too. Some types are more stiff and rigid, while others are softer and more pliable. You can use any type of felt for these hearts - the main thing is you like the colors!

    How do you cut felt?

First, make sure your scissors are sharp. This will make it easier to cut, and the edges will be much smoother. Next, cut slowly and smoothly. Finally, trim up the edges with small snips to remove any rough edges.

Where do I get the wooden bases for this project?

The wooden bases I used for this project are small pieces of 1" wooden dowel, with a hole drilled in the center that is slightly larger than my small wooden dowels that make the stems of the heart trees.

If you don't have the tools to cut a dowel and drill holes in the center of the pieces, you could use a wooden thread spool that has a hole through the middle, and glue the small dowel in with hot glue.

How to make Valentine's Day felt hearts.

These felt hearts can be customized depending on the type of heart shape you use, the color of felt you choose, the style of wooden base you pick, and the height you want your dowel.

You can even make them with different shapes for other holidays or seasons; the same method applies.
