LEARN HOW TO USE DIFFERENT COLORS AND WRAPPING TECHNIQUES TO MAKE EASY MULTI-COLORED POM POMS OUT OF YARN!
All you need to make a perfect pom pom is yarn, scissors, and your hand.
Depending on how many fingers you use and how many times you wrap the yarn around your hand, you can make them any size you want.
You can also add variety to your yarn pom poms by using different colors of yarn, and wrapping the yarn in different ways.
Today, we’ll look at how you can change the look of yarn pom poms by using different yarn colors and wrapping techniques.
Here’s how to do it!
HOW TO MAKE EASY POM POMS:
For every pom pom variation below, we are using the handmade pom pom method I talk about in this post, and we are wrapping yarn 50 times total around two fingers.
How to Make Multi-Colored Pom Poms | Easy Yarn Pom Pom Variations
Step 1. Gather Supplies.
Supplies Needed:
- Yarn
- Scissors
- Your Hand
Step 2: How to make a half-and-half colored pom pom:
To make a half-and-half colored pom pom, you need two colors of yarn.
Wrap the first color 25 times around two fingers, and then wrap the second color around 25 times, next to the first.
Use the piece of yarn you placed between your fingers to tie the yarn bundle tight.
**The handmade pom pom method I use to make the pom poms is explained in detail in this post HERE.
Cut the loops of the pom pom free.
Trim it into a ball.
There’s your half-and-half colored pom pom!
Half is blue and half is pink! (Or whatever colors of yarn you choose.)
Step 3: How to make a tri-colored pom pom:
The process for making a tri-colored pom pom is the same as the half-and-half method, except since you are using THREE colors this time, you only need to wrap each color 17 times.
You want to have a total of 50 wraps, so when you use two colors, you can wrap each color 25 times (2 x 25 = 50.)
If you use three colors, you wrap each color 17 times (3 x 17 = 51.)
Wrap the first color around your fingers 17 times, and then repeat with the other two colors so they are all side by side.
Use the tie string and tie it into a tight bundle.
Trim the loops free.
Trim into a neat ball.
I used Neapolitan colors because I thought it would be SO CUTE to use it as the “ice cream” portion of a pom pom ice cream cone like we made and then turned into an ice cream cone garland.
**You DO NOT need to be exact when you make pom poms if you don’t want to. I’m showing how to control the size of your pom poms as you make different variations. If you want to have equal sized pom poms, you can control the size by making sure each is wrapped a TOTAL of 50 times.)
Step 4. How to make multi-colored pom poms with TWO yarn colors:
You can also make a different type of two-toned pom pom.
This time, instead of wrapping each color 25 times side by side on your finger, you wrap BOTH colors at the same time, wrapping 25 times.
Since you are using two pieces of yarn, if you wrap 25 times, you’ll have a TOTAL of 50 wraps.
When I first tried to make this type of pom pom, I wrapped 50 times, using both strands of yarn.
The resulting pom pom was huge, because it actually was a pom made with 100 total wraps since there were two strands of yarn.
In the photo below, the left pom pom is 50 total wraps (25 wraps with both strands at the same time.)
The right pom pom is 100 total wraps (50 wraps with both strands at the same time.)
Step 5. How to make multi-colored pom poms with THREE yarn colors:
In this version of a pom pom, you wrap THREE colors of yarn at the SAME TIME, and you wrap 17 times. (3 x 17 = 51.)
Tie your pom pom bundle tightly.
Cut the loops free from the pompom.
Trim into a neat ball.
There is a multi-colored pom pom using THREE different colors of yarn!
Step 6. How to make a two-toned pom pom.
In this pom pom, you will wrap one color of yarn around your fingers 20 times, keeping the yarn consolidated in a small bunch.
Then you will wrap a second color of yarn around the first color, wrapping 30 times, letting this color envelope and cover up the first.
Tie into a bundle.
Cut the loops free.
Trim into a ball shape!
This type of a pom pom can be used to make crafts like little pom pom animals (using pink for the center and brown for the outside to create the belly of a bunny, for example!)
I also think this style of pom pom looks like an eye ball, which (if made with the right colors) could be used in Halloween decor!
Step 7. How to make another two-toned pom pom variation.
For this one, I wrapped one color around my fingers 25 times, and I spread out the wrapping.
Then, I wrapped the second color 25 times, again spreading it out as I wrapped.
Tie it into a bundle.
Cut the loops free.
Trim into a ball.
This process makes a pom pom that looks similar to the two-toned eyeball version, but the middle section isn’t enclosed in the center.
The middle section is bigger and takes up the bulk of the pom pom, with two sections of the other color on the outsides.
Depending on the number of colors of yarn you use, and the technique you use to wrap them, you can make vastly different looking pom poms!
This can be useful for making all kinds of pom pom crafts like garlands, mobiles, hair accessories, pom pom animals and more.
My favorite of all remains the tri-colored Neapolitan ice cream pom pom… I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything cuter!
