How to Make Yarn Wrapped Hearts

Learn how to make yarn wrapped hearts using cardboard shape cutouts and yarn. Turn these DIY yarn hearts into a garland or use in your decor.

Materials

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Yarn
  • Hot Glue Gun and Glue
  • Paper Heart Template
  • Pencil

Instructions

  • Trace your heart shape onto cardboard.
  • Cut out the heart shapes.
  • Hot glue yarn to the middle of the heart.
  • Begin to wrap the yarn around the heart in a varied pattern, with the goal being to cover all the cardboard.
  • Continue to wrap the yarn in different directions until you've covered up all of the visible cardboard.
  • Once you've covered the whole cardboard heart with wrapped yarn, cut the yarn with a few inches to spare.
Tuck the yarn tail underneath one of the other yarn strands on the backside, and use hot glue to secure it.
  • Repeat this same process for all of the hearts and yarn colors you've chosen.

Notes

  • Medium-weight yarn seems to work best for this project and bonus - that's usually the cheapest yarn option!
  • Wrap the yarn in varying ways around the cardboard so the whole cardboard shape gets covered evenly.
  • Change up the cardboard shape for other seasons or holidays like Easter, 4th of July, or Christmas!
