Since closing on our first ever home on Tuesday, October 16th, life has been a whirlwind for us.
And that’s putting it mildly.
Every night since has seen us out at the new house filling nail holes, painting, ripping up carpet, tiling, and now, putting in hardwood floors.
Along with the most generous and valuable help of our families, Matt and I have begun to transform our first ever house into our First Home.
As I type this, my body aches from the physical manual labor we have been putting in during the evenings. My hands are cracked, sore and raw from cleaning chemicals used as I scrubbed our apartment to get it ready for the move-out inspection. I haven’t slept a full night’s sleep in weeks, and my diet is almost too embarrassing to mention.
Simply put, I’m exhausted.
So is Matt, and so are my precious parents who have been out helping us every night.
However, as I carefully consider and choose which pieces of maple hardwood flooring to lay in the jigsaw puzzle that is becoming our living room/dining room/kitchen floor, and as I swing the hammer to staple those carefully chosen pieces into place, I know that I am helping create this masterpiece. I am helping to build a part of our first home. I am helping make it ours.
All the aches I feel in my body and the heaviness of my tired eyes are worth it a hundred times over when I look at the floor and know that it is being made by our hands, and that it will be OURS.
*Photos of the floor process to come. All these nights of work on the house haven’t left much time to upload the photos that I have taken. Stay tuned; I hope you’ll check back to see the process and finished product.*
